How does Giving & Gleaning work?

Example #1

A farmer has 10 acres...
• He designates 1 acre to Visalia Rescue Mission.
• The farmer's sales company issues a check for the net sales from that acre.
• At the farmer’s request, ProvisionBridge issues a check to Visalia Rescue Mission.

Breakdown
• Value of crop (post-packaging): $10,000
• Gleaning from crop: $1,000
• Income/inventory: $9,000**
 ----------------------------------------------------
*ProvisionBridge retains a 4% fee ($40) of the farmer’s gleaning.
**Value of taxable event to the farmer, minus expenses.

Example #3

A dairy owner has 50 cows, who birth 50 calves...
• 5 calves are designated for Visalia Rescue Mission
• These calves are tagged and raised, then auctioned
• The revenue from this gleaning is deposited in the dairy owner’s Donor Advised Fund
• At the dairy owner’s request, ProvisionBridge issues a check to Visalia Rescue Mission.

Breakdown
Dairy’s yield: 50 calves
Gleaning from cattle: 5 calves
Income/inventory: 45 calves

Example #2

A farmer expects to yield 1,000 cases of fruit...
  • He ends up with1,200 cases.
  • The extra 200 cases are sold to a buyer.
 • The extra revenue from this gleaning is deposited
in the farmer’s Donor Advised Fund.
     • At the farmer’s request, ProvisionBridge issues
a check to Visalia Rescue Mission.

Breakdown
Farmer’s yield: 1,200 cases
Gleaning from crop: 200 cases
Income/inventory: 1,000 cases
 ----------------------------------------------------
In this example, the farmer does not pay taxes on the extra yield above his expectation. The extra gleaning ultimately benefits Visalia Rescue Mission, without the extra income hitting the farmer’s financial records.

Example #4

A business owner has 10 forklifts...
• The unused forklifts go to auction or sold to an equipment yard.
• Proceeds from sale is deposited into business owner’s Donor Advised Fund.
• At business owner’s request, ProvisionBridge issues a check to Visalia Rescue Mission.
